Afshan Kuba Shirvan Rug, late 1800s.
Size 167 cm x 99 cm
Warp: wool, weft: cotton, pile: wool.
This charming Afshan Kuba design Shirvan rug is a stunning example of Caucasian artistry and originality: woven in the late 1800s, the crab-bordered motifs in blue, red and yellow on a white ground incorporate elements of Kazak designs from the nearby Caucasus. The soft azure ground of the main field provides a stunning contrast to the large red stepped floral motifs. These motifs are surrounded and framed by the famous Afshan L-shaped dragon (fork-leaf) symbol. The carpet has a garden feel to it and the weaver has cleverly chosen a relatively small number of colours to focus on the symbols of the motifs, giving balance and calm to the overall design.
This wonderful antique tribal rug has a few minor repairs and some worn areas that give character to this 135-year-old woven rug. Still highly usable in any interior.
