Antique "ORDUCH KONAGKEND" (Konak kent), Shirvan Konakkend, Eastern Caucasus Mountains, late 19th century (circa 1880), original condition.
Dimensions 196 cm x 106 cm.
This beautiful rug is made from natural dyes of vegetable origin and has bright, harmonious colours. The dark blue ground, filled with motifs of small stars, animals and the circle of life, is framed by three medallions with a cross in the centre, framed in gold and appearing to float. Between the medallions are two tree of life motifs. A tonal blue and red guard border flanks the ivory main border with a calyx and leaf motif. This field and border design is one of three classic layouts of 19th century Conagkend village textiles. This beautiful antique carpet is woven in all-wool, using natural hand-spun wool for the warp and weft yarns. The original selvedge
and original fringe make this a wonderful antique rug.
Slight age and wear, short pile and some old repairs.
