A fine beautiful rug, woven in the Zil i Sultan design. Repeats of 6 types of flowers on an ivory-coloured base cover the whole of the carpet. A narrow border of flowers and boteh, surround the main field. Peter F. Stone, in his book; “Tribal and Village Rugs” describes the name Zil i Sultan as translating from Arabic as “shadow of the emperor” a reference to a Qajar prince governing Persia’s southern provinces in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The motif is a repeating design of floral sprays in vases. Low original pile, with some slightly worn patches. However, in overall very good condition.
