Aydin Cine Kilim second half 19th Century
Size 380cm x 156cm (12' 6" x 5' 1")
Warp: wool Weft: wool
In this very old Aydin Cine kilim, motifs such as mother earth, rams horns, dragons, stars and combs can be seen. These motifs represent, power, protection, happiness, balance and spring rains. We can see the weaver has used her wonderful sense of colour and space as she wove the motifs reflecting her cultural traditions as well as interweaving her thoughts and dreams for the future. In this way this Aydin Cine kilim will remain a timeless work of art.
Aquamarine and turquoise blue balance beautifully with greens and reds to give a simply wonderful overall impression. Kilims are no longer made in Aydin, which lies in Anatolia on the Aegean coast. These kilims, particularly fine antique examples such as this one, are becoming more and more difficult to find.
This antique kilim was hand-woven on a simple loom by a village or nomadic weaver sometime after 1850. Probably the weaver used wool from their own sheep. The wool was cleaned, then hand sorted, hand-spun and finally dyed by hand using natural dyes from the area such as roots, nuts, berries, fruits and plants. This kilim would have taken many months to complete.
