Antique Kazak Rug, Caucasus,
19th century (around 1875)
wool on wool
size 205 x 124 cm
An intriguing Kazak rug decorated allover by a weaver who obviously had a joy of animals, flowers and the archaic symbols that have been passed down to her through her cultural heritage. The outer border of s-shaped dragon symbols protects the inner field, which is alive with more dragon symbols and the animals that she cherished. The three main medallions also contain animals and several archaic symbols. I have never seen these on any other Caucasian rug, making this a very rare rug indeed. I think the yellow, blue and reds in the main border are particularly attractive and well woven giving balance to the whole design. In good overall condition.
