Yomut Turkmen, Gurgan carpet, late-19th century.
Warp wool; Weft wool; Pile wool
Size: 152 cm x 108 cm.
This beautiful typical Turkmen carpet was woven by the Yomut tribe. These Yomut people live in north-eastern Persia, on the Gurgan plain.
This rare antique carpet is woven in subtle shades with various coloured Octagonal Gul (main motifs) in the centre section. Deep purple-browns, brown, and ivory are used. Both the the main motif as well as the border design are often found on Yomut Torba as well as other types of bags. The weaver has achieved a fine sense of balance and design using only a few repeating motifs and a small range of colours giving this rug a very tribal feel.
This carpet is antique and was woven around 1885. The pile is short but good and has some small professional repairs. Overall, the carpet is in excellent condition for a carpet woven in this period.
